Clinton River Rookery Preserve
Under Six Rivers’ ownership since 1998, this preserve was acquired by the organization with two major goals: the preservation of a great blue heron rookery on the property, and protection of the banks on both sides of the Clinton River, which runs through the entire property. Measuring at 24 acres, the preserve is a great example of the challenges of long-term riparian stewardship. As rivers flow, over time the water will slowly erode away at one side of the riverbank faster than the other. Given enough time, this will result in the course of the river changing. When property boundaries are drawn very close around the river (or infrastructure is built too close), this can cause issues. However, we can slow down erosion issues by ensuring that riversides are vegetated by deep-rooted native species, which help hold the banks in place. The great blue heron rookery is no longer present on the property, although occasional individual great blue herons can still be seen.
