Garlic Mustard Pull StewDay - Sutherland Nature Sanctuary in Lapeer

Hello Six Rivers Friends and Supporters!

We need your help! Our volunteer stewardship work was extremely limited in 2020 due to the effects of the COVID pandemic. This year, however, we are in a better position to be able to conduct safe and effective workdays, and we hope that you will join us!

Our focus in May is going to be on garlic mustard removal. Garlic mustard is a small herbaceous invasive plant that can cause a lot of damage to our ecosystems if left unchecked. It will spread along a forest floor until the ground is covered with nothing but garlic mustard, leaving no room for native plants to grow. Thankfully, its root structure is fairly weak, so it can easily be removed by hand. You can read more about it on the DNR's website here: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/invasives/BCPs_Garlic_Mustard_3-1-18_627482_7.pdf

We need your help to remove garlic mustard from our protected natural areas! If you can join us at any of these three workdays, please sign up as soon as you can. We will be following all health protocols, including wearing masks and social distancing, during these volunteer events.

Friday, May 28, 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. : Sutherland Nature Sanctuary (Metamora Township, Lapeer County)

All you need to bring is your favorite pair of work gloves and outdoor clothing. We will provide water, snacks, trash bags, and extra gloves for anyone who needs them. You are under no obligation to stay for the full four hours. If you can only work with us for two hours, we will happily accept your help!

To sign up, send an email to info@sixriversrlc.org with your your name, phone number, and the number of volunteers you are signing up for. We will send addresses and directions to registered volunteers a few days before the event. If you have any questions, you can contact me at iableson@sixriversrlc.org
