Drayton Plains Nature Center in Waterford Township is a wonderful example of an oasis of nature hidden in a sea of development. The nature center has nearly four miles of walking trails, an interpretive center, a pavilion, and old fish hatchery ponds. The walking trails wind through a wide variety of Michigan habitats, including a white pine forest, woodland prairie, and southern wet meadow. Over 170 different species of birds have been recorded at the Drayton Plains Nature Center, including such regionally uncommon species as the northern shoveler, the Philadelphia vireo, and the northern harrier.
